I started working as a visiting artist in residence on Monday, Feb. 25, at Natomas Charter School in Sacramento, CA. I am creating an outdoor public art installation titled “Guns into Flowers”  with the students to raise awareness about gun violence in our schools and communities. We are making a handmade paper quilt with a gun motif and seeds for wildflowers in the pulp to transform the guns into flowers over time as the paper pulp dissolves into compost, and the seeds begin to sprout and grow into blooming flowers. Here is a photo of some of the students learning about papermaking and getting introduced to the project at Natomas Charter School Academy of Performing and Fine Arts. Photos to document the project are by Timothy S. Allen. Keep watching this Blog to see more photos and follow the progress as we continue with papermaking workshops this week and next to make the quilt squares. The official opening ceremony and laying down of the “quilt” will be on Saturday, March 16 at 2PM in the park at South Natomas Community Center, Sacramento, CA.

The participants in my Saturday Oct. 6 workshop “Papermaking for Printmakers” had a productive and creative day making handmade paper from a variety of plant fiber pulps. They learned Western and Asian/Japanese papermaking techniques for sheet forming, pressing, drying, watermarking, embossing, laminating and other special technique to create their own unique handmade paper suitable for priintmaking. It was a very congenial group because all of the participants in this workshop do letterpress printing together at the Sebastopol studio of North Bay Letterpress Arts https://www.northbayletterpressarts.org

During this workshop we made paper from the following pulps: Abaca, blue jean, eucalyptus and Sitka Spruce as well as some sedge, beach grass and paper mulberry. Here are some photos of the workshop. The photos are by Timothy S. Allen (allentimphotos2.wordpress.com)

I can’t wait to see what the printmakers will do with the sheets they made and how the finished prints will look.  I hope to post some photos of their prints on handmade paper soon on this Blog.  The next hand papermaking workshop at my Santa Rosa studio will be “Papermaking for Fiber Artists” on Saturday and Sunday, Nov.10 and 11.  This class is already full, but contact me at info@janeingramallen if you want to be put on the waiting list.

I am also teaching a special workshop “From Plants to Paper” at the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation, 900 Occidental Road, Santa Rosa, on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20 and 21. We will make paper from local plants and go through the whole process from gathering plant materials to producing unique handmade papers from plants of the Laguna, such as dogbane, willow, sedge, cattail, bullrush and others we will discover there. We will also see what papermaking we can do with some invasive plants found in the Laguna.  Places are still available in this workshop, and to register go to this link:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/from-plants-to-paper-papermaking-with-laguna-plants-tickets-49579227805

It was great to have the help of students at Laney College, Oakland, CA, to make paper for my eco art installation at the 2016 Bioneers Conference in San Rafael, CA, at the Marin Center Oct. 20-23. My art installation is part of the WEAD exhibition (www.weadartists.org) at this environmental art conference.

On Tuesday Oct. 11, the students in the Laney College Eco-Art Matters class made many sheets of blue handmade paper using pulp from old blue jeans. The blue pulp also has seeds for blue wildflowers in it, and the students will shape the blue seeded paper into hundreds of water drops to install on a wall at the Bioneers environmental conference. Thanks to the class instructors Andree Thompson and Sharon Siskin and to all the students who helped with this installation.

My installation is called “Every Drop Counts” and aims to raise awareness about the importance of conserving water.  Visitors at the conference will be invited to take a drop from the installation and make a pledge to conserve water.
Here are some photos taken by my husband Timothy S. Allen at Laney College on Tuesday October 11 during the papermaking activity.

I am doing an environmental art installation here in the SF area as an exhibiting artist for the 2016 Bioneers Conference (http://conference.bioneers.org)
to be held Oct. 21-23 at the Marin Center, San Rafael, California. I will present an interactive installation called “Every Drop Counts”. For the 2016 Bioneers conference, the WEAD (Women Eco Artists Dialog) organization (www.weadartists.org) is organizing an art exhibition about “Reciprocity” with an environmental theme showing how art can contribute to more public awareness of environmental issues such as water conservation.

every-drop-counts-2008-detail

I will go to Laney College, Oakland, on Tuesday, October 11 to work with the art class “Eco Art Matters” to create hundred of handmade paper “drops” using blue paper pulp made from old blue jeans and other recycled paper with seeds for blue wildflowers in the pulp. At the 4 days of the Bioneers Conference Oct. 21-23 at the Marin Center, San Rafael, the installation will be displayed and visitors invited to make a pledge to conserve water and take a “drop” from the installation home with them to plant and water until it transforms into blue wildflowers….or save the “drop” on the refrigerator to remind them to conserve water. Lack of water is one of the most pressing problems in northern California in the last few years because of prolonged drought and global warming effects.
Water is a concern all over the world, and this installation has been shown in several other venues…it has been in a NYC gallery, in a gallery in Geneva, Switzerland, as well as at a university gallery in Taiwan. This will be its debut in California with new drops being made at the Laney College class and maintained during the conference by Laney College students and the two art professors (Andree Thompson and Sharon Siskin).

Here are some photos of the installation in New York City at Tenri Gallery in 2009 and in Geneva, Switzerland at the Villa Dutoit, for the Paper/Fiber Art Biennial in 2016.

I have just returned to the US after completing my Fulbright Specialist grant project at the Museum of Paper and Book Arts, Ege University, Izmir, Turkey, from Nov. 25 to Dec. 14, 2015. It was a great experience being in Turkey for the first time and having a chance to make my handmade paper artwork with plants from Izmir. I used 9 local plants in Izmir collecting the bark or leaves around Ege University campus. Staff at the Museum of Paper and Book Arts were great to help with preparing the pulp for papermaking, and local people learned the process of making paper from local plant waste materials with my modified Asian method. The 9 plants I used in Izmir were bark from mulberry, olive. ruscus, cypress, cedar and fig trees; leaves from fan palm and phoenix palm and husks from corn. Here are some photos of the papermaking process in Izmir at the Museum of Paper and Book Arts.

We set up an outdoor studio for the cooking, beating and sheet forming. I also had an indoor studio in the basement of the museum for assembling my artwork, and part of the process of creating the Izmir Site Map was done in the upstairs gallery as an Open Studio so visitors could see my work in progress. I taught papermaking workshops, gave demonstrations and provided lectures at the university for students, faculty and local artists and visiting school groups.

During this project I also created an “Izmir Site Map,” a handmade paper artwork continuing my series of map-based artworks about a particular place using materials from that place. The Izmir Site Map artwork is in the shape of the city, and I used the handmade paper I made from local plants joined with local natural thread. The Izmir Site Map is a mixed media (handmade paper, collage, painting) two-sided suspended installation. This work was donated to the Museum in Izmir and will remain on display in the contemporary gallery of the Ege University Museum of Paper and Book Art. Here are some photos of the Izmir Site Map in progress and after completion in the gallery of the Museum

My Izmir Site Map and 3 other site maps of handmade paper created in other residencies were exhibited at the EgeArt Days in Izmir at the Museum of Paper and Book Arts, Ege University, from Dec. 3 -13, 2015. I also exhibited a Taiwan Site Map (Floral Abundance) made with plants of Taiwan during my 2004-05 Fulbright artist in residency in Taiwan, my Bali Site Map created at Bali Purnati Center for the Arts in Bali, Indonesia using local plants and my Salmon River Estuary Site Map created at Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, Otis, Oregon, using local plants for the handmade paper construction.  The opening reception was an exciting time with many local and international visitors.  The Rector of Ege University and many students also came to the opening of my exhibition at the Museum of Paper & Book Arts.

During this Fulbright Specialist grant project in Turkey I also acted as a consultant to help the Museum plan a papermaking studio and provided educational materials about the equipment and materials for Asian style papermaking and how to continue using local plant materials for papermaking in Izmir. The local fig tree bark and the bark of the many white mulberry trees around the Ege University campus were excellent for making paper as well as the cedar and cypress tree bark. I really enjoyed the time at the Museum of Paper and Book Arts, Izmir, and the staff and Director Nedim Sanmez were great to work with.  I will stay in touch with the Museum to provide additional help and hope we can plan some future collaborations.

The photos here are by my husband Timothy S. Allen http://allentimphotos2.wordpress.com

Tim accompanied me to Izmir and helped with this art project and also took many photos around Izmir and Istanbul during our time in Turkey.
