I am happy to announce that my “Living Quilts” are featured in today’s ART NEWS publication. Art writer Julia Travers contacted me recently about writing a feature for ART NEWS about my outdoor public art installations “Living Quilts” that make use of handmade paper with seeds for wildflowers in the pulp to grow and change over time into living blooming artworks. This article talks mainly about my most recent living quilt made in the Summer Youth Art Program of Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, Otis, Oregon (www.sitkacenter.org)

Installing the “Living Quilt for Nestucca” on August 12, 2021, at Nestucca K-12 School Garden, Cloverdale, OR

This ART NEWS article also mentions other Living Quilts I have done in Santa Rosa, CA, with the City of Santa Rosa Public Art Program in 2018, and in 2019 in Newnan, Georgia, with the Newnan Art Rez program.

The photos for the Art News article are all by my husband Timothy S. Allen https://allentimphotos2.wordpress.com

New Art Project in Oregon – Living Quilt for Nestucca Valley

paper pulp, papermaking, salmon conservation

The first two weeks in August I will be a visiting artist at Sitka Center for Art & Ecology (www.sitkacenter.org) to work with their new Summer Youth Program and create a “living quilt” art installation at the Nestucca Valley Elementary School grounds. My “living quilts” are site specific outdoor art installations meant to change over time and work with nature as a partner. The “quilts” are made with handmade paper in a selected quilt pattern, and the pulp has seeds for wildflowers in the same colors and pattern. The “quilt” is installed on a prepared bed, and over time the paper dissolves into compost to nourish the earth, and the seeds sprout and grow into a blooming flower bed.

For this quilt, we are using a quilt design representing three of the most pressing environmental problems in this coastal Oregon region: salmon preservation, forest preservation and water conservation. Here is a photo of one of the quilt squares I made this week in my Santa Rosa, CA, studio to try out the design for Living Quilt for Nestucca Valley. I will be doing papermaking workshops with the kids during the two weeks, August 1 – 13, and we expect to install the 8 feet x 10 feet quilt on August 12, 2021. We will make 24 of these 16″ x 21″ squares and borders with tree images at the top and bottom and on each side. Keep watching this Blog for updates on the project and photos of the process.

On this Independence Day in 2021, let’s celebrate our country as we recognize its imperfections and inequalities and strive to improve it. It is continually evolving and still a work in process. Here are images of a few of the many American Flag artworks I have created over the years.

“Blowin’ in the Wind”, 1992, 5 feet x 12 feet, artist-made handmade paper, string, acrylic paint, mylar, commissioned by ASCAP (American Society for Composers, Authors and Publishers) and Morton Gould for the organization’s boardroom at their Lincoln Center headquarters in New York City.
Rainbow Flag, 1992, 4 feet x 6 feet, acrylic paint, string, on artist made handmade paper, now in a private collection.
Flag in Two Pieces, 1992, 3 feet x 50 inches x 12 inches, artist-made handmade paper, string, acrylic paint, now in private collection.
“Living Flag”, 2003, 6 feet x 3 feet, handmade paper, dye, seeds for wildflowers, soil, outdoor public art installation to change over time, created during artist in residency at Delaware Center for Contemporary Art (now Delaware Contemporary), Wilmington, DE, to change over time into living blooming wildflowers as the paper pulp dissolves into mulch to nourish the earth.

Here is a link to a video on YouTube that shows how I am creating the Living Quilt for Steckborn in my Santa Rosa, CA, studio.

This artwork will be installed in April 2021 in a public park in Steckborn, Switzerland. I was invited to create this outdoor environmental art installation by Haus zur Glocke (https://www.hauszurglocke.ch/home/) Living Quilt for Steckborn is a handmade paper quilt that has seeds for wildflowers in the pulp to grow and change over time into a living flower bed. The quilt pattern I am using for this installation is based on a traditional American quilt pattern called “Delectable Mountains” or “Peaks and Valleys”. This design recalls the journey of American pioneers across the beautiful and sometimes dangerous mountains as they traveled West in wagon trains to settle in the West. The design with tall mountains also refers to the mountains of Switzerland visible from the town of Steckborn, on the shores of Lake Constance in the northeastern part of Switzerland.

I will be making this quilt for the next few weeks and also deciding if it is possible to travel to Switzerland to install it and make a headboard and footboard for the “bed” in the park in Steckborn. If travel is not possible because of the pandemic and quarantines, I will mail the “living quilt” to Haus zur Glocke in Steckborn, Switzerland, and provide instructions for its installation. Keep watching my Blog to see updates on the progress of making the “quilt” and its installation in Switzerland.

This photo shows me making the handmade paper quilt for Steckborn in my studio. Also, here is a photo of some of the completed blocks hanging on a clothesline to dry.

Photos of my art projects are by my husband Timothy S. Allen, and you can see many of his photographs on his Blog at https://allentimphotos2.wordpress.com

Here are some of the art projects I am currently participating in and some that are coming up soon, as we venture forth from the pandemic and quarantine.

Hello World is an international online art exhibition and art project by TransCultural Exchange in Boston, MA. This international art project was conceived and curated by artist/curator Mary Sherman. This pandemic art project was conceived as a way to bring together artists from various countries around the world to share what they are doing and continue international cultural exchange travel during this time of the pandemic. This art project will be online indefinitely, and here is a link to my contribution for this project (click on the far-right photo in the second line):

California Petals is a public art installation I created in August 2020 for a downtown storefront window in Santa Rosa, CA, and it can be viewed at any time from now to October 15, 2020. My installation is part of the Santa Rosa Downtown Chamber’s “Open and Out” program of cultural activities in the downtown area to encourage people to stroll around in the “pedestrians only” blocks of Fourth Street where many restaurants and stores are now open for outdoor dining and limited in-person shopping. My art installation is in a vacant storefront window at 620 Fourth Street, and it consists of many giant handmade paper flower petals with seeds for California wildflowers in the pulp. After the installation comes down on October 15, I plan to “plant” these petals in Santa Rosa so that they will change over time, sprout and bloom in colorful wildflowers. Here is a link to my Blog that has more information about “California Petals”: https://www.openandoutsr.com/art/art1-cbcmw

Falling Open: On & Off the Page, Themes of Our Time is a group exhibition at Gallery Route One, Point Reyes Station, CA, that will be online as well as open for appointment viewing from September 18 to October 15, 2020. This is an invitational exhibition of artworks selected by curator Renee Owen that includes handmade artist books, installations and other works that relate to current environmental, social and pandemic issues. For this exhibition I will be showing a new work titled “Daily Scrolls” created during my first months of pandemic quarantine. This artwork has 91 handmade paper scrolls each with unique text and images that reflect my daily thoughts and experiences during this time. For more information about this exhibition: https://galleryrouteone.org/upcoming-events/

Upcoming Art Projects and Activities

2020 Lucid Art Foundation Alumni Exhibition is an online exhibition of selected works by past artists in residence at the Lucid Art Foundation in Inverness, CA. I was an artist in residence at the Lucid Art Foundation in 2013, and for this exhibition one handmade paper sculpture I made during my 2013 residency and another handmade paper sculpture created this year will be included. The first piece made in 2013 is titled “Feather Duster” and makes use of branches from a local olive tree and handmade paper “feathers” I created from local plants. My other paper sculpture in this exhibition created in 2020 is titled “Paper Poppy” and depicts a giant California golden poppy like those blooming in my yard during the pandemic this Spring. Here is a link to this online exhibition: http://www.lucidart.org/exhibitions#current-exhibitions

Living Quilt for Sojourner Truth, Artist in Residency Project, Sacramento, CA is a public art project that will be completed in November 2020 at the Sojourner Truth Community Garden, Sacramento, CA. I was selected for the City of Sacramento’s Artist in Residency Program to create a site-specific art installation at a community garden in the Pocket-Greenhaven area of Sacramento. For this project I had planned public participation activities and workshops, but this has not been possible because of the pandemic. I will create the handmade paper “quilt” in a traditional “North Star” pattern with seeds in the pulp and bring it to Sacramento in November to create a “bed” for the “quilt” and install it at the Sojourner Truth Community Garden where it will transform over time. I will be making Zoom programs for online public participation. For information about the City of Sacramento Artist in Residency program: https://arts.cityofsacramento.org/Programs/Sacramento-AIR See my Blog for updates about this project and the upcoming Zoom programs: https://janeingramallen.wordpress.com

Labor Natur, Haus zur Glocke, Steckborn, Switzerland is an exhibition curated by Judit Villager of works by three international artists who explore connections between art and science and use nature as a laboratory. This exhibition is open to the public in Switzerland from November 21, to December 12, 2020. For this exhibition I will be shipping some of my handmade paper “site maps” made in residencies around the world to Switzerland and also creating a new “site map” of the Lake Constance area encompassing Switzerland, Germany and Austria in my Santa Rosa, California, studio. I am doing online research gathering photos and information about plants that are common to northern California and the Steckborn area. Also, Judit Villager is sending me some materials by mail from Switzerland that I can put into the mixed media handmade paper site map. I hope to be able to travel to Switzerland in Spring 2021 for an artist in residency public art project at Haus zur Glocke. Just wanted to let everyone know that the Zoom program I did this past Wednesday, July 8, 2020, for Yolo Arts “Knowledge at Noon” is available to watch anytime online at this link: https://yoloarts.org/public-programs/

The program goes over my process of making paper from local plant materials and creating my handmade paper art at several different artist in residency projects in Taiwan and different countries as well as in the US. Hope you get a chance to see it and let me know what you think.

I am continuing to work in my studio here in our garage in Santa Rosa, CA, and I hope to be able to go out for other art projects later in this year or next. I am doing some individual consulting and one-on-one papermaking in my studio now. Let’s keep in touch by email at least. I look forward to hearing from you.
Take care and best wishes,
Jane

Hope you can come to the opening of this group exhibition in Woodland, CA, where I will have two installations featured:
One is an indoor site specific installation of my “California Delta Rivers” first created in 2013 and re-configured to make a wall drawing installation for this exhibition focused on the water resources in northern CA. The work is made with handmade paper and cotton threads and pulp is dyed with fiber reactive dyes. Here is a photo of California Delta Rivers as installed at the Barn Gallery in Woodland.

I also have an outdoor installation in this exhibition. My “Flower Power” installation consists of many handmade paper “guns” with seeds for wildflowers in the pulp that will transform the “guns” over time into living blooming wildflowers. This installation is place in a prepared raised bed just outside the Barn Gallery, and focuses on using nature as a partner and the regenerative power of nature. The handmade paper will dissolve as mulch to nourish the earth and the seeds sprout and grow into blooming wildflowers. Here is a photo of “Flower Power” when it was first installed outside the Barn Gallery in Woodland.

My works are part of the group exhibition Women Eco Artists Dialog: The Legacy of Jo Hanson, at Yolo Arts, the Barn Gallery 512 Gibson Rd., Woodland, CA. The exhibition will be on view through June 18, 2020 and features works about environmental issues by selected WEAD artists:  Jane Ingram Allen, Krista Anandakuttan, Angela Gonzalez, Maria Paz Gutierrez, Cynthia Jensen, Elizabeth Kenneday-Corathers, Judith Selby Lang, Isabella La Rocca, Linda MacDonald, Carol Newborg, Lisa Reindorf, Lorna Stevens, Michelle Waters, Melissa West, Tammy West, and Mary Bayard White.  See the Yolo Arts website at http://www.yoloarts.org for more information and gallery hours.

My Living Quilt for Santa Rosa installation continues to bloom. It is very hot now in Santa Rosa, over 100 degrees Fahrenheit and it’s also very dry now. Some of the flowers are now making seeds and the plants will hopefully come again next season. Here are some photos of the installation taken this past weekend showing blooming cornflowers and other flowers going to seed.  Somehow one red poppy also appeared in this installation!

This artwork was installed on Nov. 25, 2018, and it is located at Rincon Ridge Park in the Fountaingrove area of Santa Rosa, CA. I received a grant from the City of Santa Rosa to do this art project that involves handmade paper and seeds for wildflowers with participation by community volunteers. Check posts from November 2018 and following in this Blog for more information and photos of the changing over time installation.  All photos are by my husband Timothy S. Allen (allentimphotos2.wordpress.com).
