See it before May 3, 2026:  My work “Legal Pad with Grocery List” is on display at the Crocker Museum, Sacramento, CA, in the exhibition Making Moves: a Collection of Feminisms until May 3.  See the Crocker Museum’s Exhibitions website for more information: https://www.crockerart.org/art/exhibitions/making-moves-a-collection-of-feminisms?utm_source=wordfly&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ENews4.8.26(DEFEM)&utm_content=version_A

My piece (c 1975) is now in the collection of the Crocker Art Museum, and it is a loom woven over-sized legal pad with my family’s typical grocery list written on it with hand embroidery.  It is an honor to have my work in the Crocker’s collection and to have this piece shown with so many excellent feminist artists, including Frida Kahlo!

Solo Exhibition Opens May 16, 2026, in Benicia, CA:  The Work of Earth and Hand:  Jane Ingram Allen

Opening Reception and Artist Talk on Saturday, May 16, 5-7 pm, at NY2CA Gallery, 617 First Street, Benicia, CA

For more information about this show of handmade paper and mixed media works spanning some 50 years of my career, see the gallery website at: https://ny2cagallery.com/event/the-work-of-earth-and-hand-jane-ingram-allen/

NY2CA Gallery Director Vickie Marchand has visited my Santa Rosa studio two times to select works for this show and to plan activities during the exhibition which will close on June 21.

I will also be in Benica on Saturday, June 6, at the gallery to do a public art installation I am calling “Building Community – Benicia Houses” that will involve some hands-on public participation papermaking to create over 100 small houses and arrange them for a public art installation in the gallery’s back garden space.  Volunteers who have taken my papermaking workshops will be helping participants create their own “house” for the installation that will remain on view until June 21.  The papermaking activity will run from 11 – 4 on June 6.  There will also be many other activities that day in downtown Benicia with lots of art to see!

One of more than 35 works in my Benicia Exhibition at NY2CA Gallery
California Blooming – Poppies, 2025, 25 x 75 inches, Mixed Media handmade paper pulp painting with threads and gel.

34 of my “Made in Taiwan” artworks created during my two years (2003-04 and 2004-05) as a Fulbright Scholar Artist in Taiwan are now in the collection of the Tainan Art Museum, Tainan, Taiwan.

All of these works now in the Tainan Art Museum’s collection were created using materials collected at 13 different places all around Taiwan, where I used over 135 different plants of Taiwan to make the handmade paper for these mixed-media artworks.   I am planning an exhibition of some of these handmade paper “sitemaps” with the Tainan Art Museum curators for Fall 2026.  Check back for more details on this exhibition and some public workshops and other activities on a possible 2-week trip to Taiwan at the end of October and first of November, 2026.

One of the 34 works in the collection of Tainan Art Museum, Tainan, Taiwan
Chiayi Site Map, 2005, 35 x 78 inches, mixed media, handmade paper from plants of Chiayi County, Taiwan, thread, acrylic paint and gel, other items collected in Chiayi, part of my “Made In Taiwan” Fulbright Scholar research grant project.

New Collaboration Feeling the Heat with printmaking artist Jami Taback is in progress. Jami and I are calling this new multi-part eco-art installation “Feeling the Heat”, and it is focused on environmental issues related to fire, global warming and climate change, using handmade paper, thread, dye, controlled burning and printmaking.  The project is an extension of our “In Deep Water” collaborative project begun in 2020 and exhibited at 5 non-profit venues in Northern California, NJ and NY as well as one foundation gallery in Taiwan.  Our In Deep Water Project was supported by grants from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Puffin Foundation and Live Forever Foundation, Taiwan.  This time the collaboration is via Zoom and shipping parts back and forth between PA where Jami now lives and Santa Rosa, CA, where I continue to be based.  We expect to premier this new installation either in Northern CA or in the Northeastern US in late 2026 or early 2027.  We are actively seeking venues to exhibit this work and also applying for grants and other support.  This “Feeling the Heat” installation will feature multiple swirling panels with fire imagery and hand papermaking and printmaking joined by threads and suspended from the ceiling in site-specific installations by the artists.  Public programs and hands-on workshops will be offered at each venue.  Keep watching for more news and photos of this in-progress large-scale eco-art collaborative installation.

Summer so far has been very busy!  It has also gotten very hot after a rather cool June.  I have been making new works and building a new papermaking mold and deckle for creating really BIG sheets of paper as well as having family visits and getting ready for teaching workshops and installing new exhibitions.

Educator Grant from Surface Design Association:  I received a 2023 Educator grant from the Surface Design Association to make a Portable Large Papermaking Mold and Deckle. I needed a large papermaking mold that could be transported in our car for the EXTREME Papermaking Workshop I am teaching at Sitka Center for Art & Ecology(www.sitkacenter.org), in Otis, Oregon, August 5 and 6.  The workshop is already full, and I am looking forward to working with these students at this beautiful place on the central Oregon coast.

Here is a photo of the new portable folding papermaking mold that can make sheets of paper 7 feet x 3 feet using a pouring method.  This should be fun to use in the workshop – just one of the many papermaking techniques I will cover in this workshop that includes all sorts of inventive and EXTREME ways of making paper that I have discovered in my papermaking travels around the world.  I will now be able to use this foldable large papermaking mold and deckle for other papermaking workshops I will be teaching in Santa Rosa and surrounding areas.

Article in Summer 2023 FiberArts Magazine:  Speaking of travel around the world my article “Papermaking Around the World” was just published in the Summer 2023 issue of FiberArt Now.  Here is a link for a summary of the article:   https://www.fiberartnow.net/summer-2023/

Scroll down to my article “Papermaking Around the World” and see an image of my Izmir, Turkey Site Map and read about my papermaking adventures as an artist in residence in 5 countries:  Costa Rica, Tanzania, Turkey, Bali and Taiwan.  The Summer 2023 issue can be ordered at www.fiberartnow.net

Hope you can come to the opening of this group exhibition in Woodland, CA, where I will have two installations featured:
One is an indoor site specific installation of my “California Delta Rivers” first created in 2013 and re-configured to make a wall drawing installation for this exhibition focused on the water resources in northern CA. The work is made with handmade paper and cotton threads and pulp is dyed with fiber reactive dyes. Here is a photo of California Delta Rivers as installed at the Barn Gallery in Woodland.

I also have an outdoor installation in this exhibition. My “Flower Power” installation consists of many handmade paper “guns” with seeds for wildflowers in the pulp that will transform the “guns” over time into living blooming wildflowers. This installation is place in a prepared raised bed just outside the Barn Gallery, and focuses on using nature as a partner and the regenerative power of nature. The handmade paper will dissolve as mulch to nourish the earth and the seeds sprout and grow into blooming wildflowers. Here is a photo of “Flower Power” when it was first installed outside the Barn Gallery in Woodland.

My works are part of the group exhibition Women Eco Artists Dialog: The Legacy of Jo Hanson, at Yolo Arts, the Barn Gallery 512 Gibson Rd., Woodland, CA. The exhibition will be on view through June 18, 2020 and features works about environmental issues by selected WEAD artists:  Jane Ingram Allen, Krista Anandakuttan, Angela Gonzalez, Maria Paz Gutierrez, Cynthia Jensen, Elizabeth Kenneday-Corathers, Judith Selby Lang, Isabella La Rocca, Linda MacDonald, Carol Newborg, Lisa Reindorf, Lorna Stevens, Michelle Waters, Melissa West, Tammy West, and Mary Bayard White.  See the Yolo Arts website at http://www.yoloarts.org for more information and gallery hours.

hand papermaking, jAsian and Western papermaking, papermaking, printmaking, Santa Rosa

The participants in my Saturday Oct. 6 workshop “Papermaking for Printmakers” had a productive and creative day making handmade paper from a variety of plant fiber pulps. They learned Western and Asian/Japanese papermaking techniques for sheet forming, pressing, drying, watermarking, embossing, laminating and other special technique to create their own unique handmade paper suitable for priintmaking. It was a very congenial group because all of the participants in this workshop do letterpress printing together at the Sebastopol studio of North Bay Letterpress Arts https://www.northbayletterpressarts.org

During this workshop we made paper from the following pulps: Abaca, blue jean, eucalyptus and Sitka Spruce as well as some sedge, beach grass and paper mulberry. Here are some photos of the workshop. The photos are by Timothy S. Allen (allentimphotos2.wordpress.com)

I can’t wait to see what the printmakers will do with the sheets they made and how the finished prints will look.  I hope to post some photos of their prints on handmade paper soon on this Blog.  The next hand papermaking workshop at my Santa Rosa studio will be “Papermaking for Fiber Artists” on Saturday and Sunday, Nov.10 and 11.  This class is already full, but contact me at info@janeingramallen if you want to be put on the waiting list.

I am also teaching a special workshop “From Plants to Paper” at the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation, 900 Occidental Road, Santa Rosa, on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20 and 21. We will make paper from local plants and go through the whole process from gathering plant materials to producing unique handmade papers from plants of the Laguna, such as dogbane, willow, sedge, cattail, bullrush and others we will discover there. We will also see what papermaking we can do with some invasive plants found in the Laguna.  Places are still available in this workshop, and to register go to this link:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/from-plants-to-paper-papermaking-with-laguna-plants-tickets-49579227805

I am back in Santa Rosa, California now after almost two months on the East Coast.  It was great to see things in Boston and New York City, but also nice to be back in California.  I wanted to share some additional photos of my handmade paper artwork installed in Boston.  Please see my previous posts for more about the process and how this artwork was created on Peddock’s Island, Boston Harbor Islands National Park.

img_0852 img_1578 img_1581 img_0844

During my August 17 – 25, 2016, Artist in Residency Project at Boston Harbor Islands National Park, Peddock’s Island, I created a handmade paper artwork that is now installed at the Boston Harbor Islands Welcome Center on Long Wharf. Jane created this artwork “For the Birds of Peddock’s Island” with handmade paper from invasive plants on Peddock’s Island (Common reed, Oriental Bittersweet Vine and Japanese Honeysuckle Vine). The handmade paper birds in this artwork were created by many public participants during a weekend workshop on Peddock’s Island. The birds in the artwork represent 6 endangered species of water birds on Peddock’s Island (Lesser Tern, Double-crested Cormorant, American Oystercatcher, Great Egret, Spotted Sandpiper and Black-crowned Night Heron). This artwork will remain on view at the Islands Welcome Center, and it can be seen up close when the Center is open during the day and at night through the large lighted glass window. Thanks again to the wonderful volunteers who helped with the papermaking on Peddock’s Island and to the many visitors who came to participate in the public activities and contributed their handmade paper birds to this installation artwork for the Boston Harbor Now Foundation and the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park.

Jane’s Artist in Residency Project Begins in Lancaster, California

Cedar Center for the Arts, eco-art, environmental art, hand papermaking, high desert plants, Lancaster CA, Museum of Art and History, WEAD Women's Eco Art Dialogue

I am now working in Lancaster, California, as an artist in residence at the Museum of Art & History, Cedar Center for the Arts. Lancaster is located in the Antelope Valley high desert country on the western edge of the Mojave Desert and about 70 miles northeast of Los Angeles. My residency is sponsored by WEAD (Women Eco Artists Dialogue) in conjunction with the WEAD group exhibition titled “Smaller Footprints” also at Cedar Center for the Arts in Lancaster, CA.

IMG_2115
My eco-art project in Lancaster got started on Saturday, Feb. 13, with an Introductory lecture and presentation for the community at Cedar Arts Center from 6-8 PM. I introduced my work with a slide show and showed examples of handmade paper and talked about my process and what I will create here in Lancaster during the residency.

Here are a few photos of the Introduction presentation at Cedar Art Center where I showed images of previous environmental art installations and talked about my idea for the Lancaster art project.

IMG_2124  IMG_2128    IMG_2142

My Lancaster Eco-Quilt will be all biodegradable and changing over time with the paper pulp dissolving as mulch and the flower seeds in the pulp sprouting and blooming for years to come, hopefully.

My Lancaster Eco-Quilt will have a motif of California golden poppies, and I will place it on prepared ground in a city park or nature preserve to decompose over time and produce a living, blooming bed of wildflowers in the quilt pattern. I will also build up a bed shape with the earth and create a headboard and footboard for the bed with local branches. I have looked at several possible sites in Lancaster for my eco-art installation, and we will make the final decision in a few weeks about the exact location.

I am making the Lancaster eco-quilt with handmade paper I create from local plant waste materials and putting seeds for California golden poppies and California desert bluebells in the pulp. Here is a sketch of my idea for the Lancaster eco-quilt.

sketch of Lancaster Eco-quilt copy

I learned that the Antelope Valley area is famous for California golden poppies, and there is a nearby Poppy Preserve. I visited the Antelope Valley California Poppy Preserve over the weekend and did see one or two California poppies starting to bloom, so this seemed like the perfect flower to use for my art project in Lancaster. The California desert bluebell will provide a nice contrasting blue flower in the quilt squares, and I will also use some white wildflower seeds (baby’s breath) for the border of the quilt.

I started gathering local plant materials this week and will be making paper for the project from Joshua tree leaves, fan palm leaves, sagebrush and other local plants. It will be very interesting to try out these high desert plants that are new ones for me to experiment with, although I have used relatives of some of these plants in other places around the world. I will be coloring the paper pulp with a non-toxic dye and using some recycled blue jean pulp for the blue areas of the quilt.

This coming Saturday, Feb. 20 I will hold a public workshop on Papermaking with Local Plants, and it will be at the Cedar Center for the Arts, MOAH, Lancaster, CA, from 11-1 and 3-5. Everyone is invited to come and join in the papermaking fun.
My residency at the Cedar Center for the Arts in Lancaster will continue through March 13, and the installation for the eco-quilt will be on Saturday, March 12.  Public programs are scheduled for each Saturday.

Keep checking this Blog for updates and more photos of the papermaking and the Lancaster eco-art quilt project. The photos documenting this project are by my husband Timothy S. Allen (http://allentimphotos2.wordpress.com).

Cheng Long, Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project, DIY, hand papermaking

I have just completed a 25-day artist in residency (April 9 – May 4, 2015) in Cheng Long Village, Yunlin County, Taiwan, where I was also the Curator of the 6th annual Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project. See the Blog at http://artproject4wetland.wordpress.com for photos and information about this international environmental art project.

This year in Cheng Long, in addition to being the curator, I made my own handmade paper artwork and involved the local community in hand papermaking activities. I created a Cheng Long site map using 10 different local plants to make the paper for the artwork. The finished Cheng Long site map is now on exhibition in an abandoned house in the small fishing village that is now being used as an art gallery  for my Cheng Long Site Map and also displaying some of the Cheng Long Elementary School children’s paintings about environmental issues.

Here are some photos of my papermaking activities in Cheng Long showing local children and parents participating.  The Cheng Long Site Map is about 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide and made in the shape of the cormorant bird that has become the unofficial mascot of Cheng Long Wetlands.  Back in 2010, a cormorant bird broke its wing and spent a whole year recuperating with the help of the Kuan Shu Foundation staff and the children in Cheng Long Elementary School. One side of my site map is a sort of map of Cheng Long village and the wetlands and has many leaves, flowers and natural materials from the area. The other side of my Cheng Long Site Map has many photos of Cheng Long children’s faces on it.

For Cheng Long I also made a sample book with recipes for making paper from the 10 local plants I used for this artwork: Paper Mulberry bark, pomgania (Indian beech tree) bark, Fan Palm leaves, Common Reed leaves, Sugar Cane leaves, Sugar Cane bark (waste from a local night market vendor), Sweet Potato vines and leaves, Beach Hibiscus tree bark, Banana leaves and Rice straw.

My Cheng Long Site Map remains on exhibit in the village, and this artwork has been donated to the Kuan Shu Environmental Education Foundation in Cheng Long for permanent display in the village.

Continuing my artist in residency at Sitka Center – Inspired by “hex signs” on local barns

barns, hand papermaking, hex signs, Jane Ingram Allen, Oregon, quilts, Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, Tillamook

Image

There are many barns and other businesses in the nearby town of Tillamook, Oregon (famous for cheese, and yes we toured the Tillamook Cheese Factory too) that have these colorful quilt pattern squares on them.  Each barn has a different pattern and makes a trail for tourists to follow in the area.  Sitka Center is located at the very southern edge of Taillamook County and actually closer to Lincoln City, Oregon, in Lincoln County, but Tillamook is an interesting place to visit about 29 miles north on the coast.  Since I am from Alabama and all my female ancestors were quilters, I am familiar with quilting patterns and wanted to try and this with handmade paper.  I started making a new series of handmade paper quilts.  Here are some photos of the first quilt and how it was created. ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

I used “buttercut” stencils on three different moulds to make the quilt squares and played around with the order and color sequences.  I joined the handmade paper quilt squares with thread glueing it with acrylic soft gel matte in my usual way so that the quilt can fold up for easy storage and transport.  It is interesting to hang this quilt in space with the light coming through and see the threads that sew this quilt together and how they contribute to the layered look.  The Boyden Studio at Sitka Center for Art & Ecology (www.sitkacenter.org) where I am lucky to be working during this residency is a wonderful big and light-filled space.  Check back later for more updates on my 3-month artist-in-residency at Sitka Center from Oct. 16 – Jan. 10.
