The “Living Quilt for Nestucca Valley” with its theme of environmental issues focused on forests, salmon and water was installed by the students at Nestucca K-8 School in Cloverdale, Oregon, on August 12, 2021. The “living quilt” project was part of the Summer Youth Program of Sitka Center for Art & Ecology (www.sitkacenter.org), and Jane Ingram Allen was a guest artist working with the students from August 1 – 12, 2021. The “living quilt” will transform over time into a living blooming bed of wildflowers in the same colors and patterns.
Kids in the summer youth program learned hand papermaking and created 24 blocks plus the 4 borders to make the “quilt”. Seeds for wildflowers in the pulp will sprout and grow and bloom in a few months in the same colors and pattern. Thank you to the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology for sponsoring the project and the Nestucca K-12 school for providing the site in the school’s garden area for this art installation.
These photos show the installation ceremony on August 12 and the finished installation. Thank you to Timothy S. Allen for the great photos he took during this project. Check back here in a few weeks to see some of the changes as the seeds begin to sprout and grow and the paper pulp dissolves into mulch.
