Cheng Long Site Map Art Project, Cheng Long Village, Yunlin County, Taiwan

I have just completed a 25-day artist in residency (April 9 – May 4, 2015) in Cheng Long Village, Yunlin County, Taiwan, where I was also the Curator of the 6th annual Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project. See the Blog at http://artproject4wetland.wordpress.com for photos and information about this international environmental art project.

This year in Cheng Long, in addition to being the curator, I made my own handmade paper artwork and involved the local community in hand papermaking activities. I created a Cheng Long site map using 10 different local plants to make the paper for the artwork. The finished Cheng Long site map is now on exhibition in an abandoned house in the small fishing village that is now being used as an art gallery  for my Cheng Long Site Map and also displaying some of the Cheng Long Elementary School children’s paintings about environmental issues.

Here are some photos of my papermaking activities in Cheng Long showing local children and parents participating.  The Cheng Long Site Map is about 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide and made in the shape of the cormorant bird that has become the unofficial mascot of Cheng Long Wetlands.  Back in 2010, a cormorant bird broke its wing and spent a whole year recuperating with the help of the Kuan Shu Foundation staff and the children in Cheng Long Elementary School. One side of my site map is a sort of map of Cheng Long village and the wetlands and has many leaves, flowers and natural materials from the area. The other side of my Cheng Long Site Map has many photos of Cheng Long children’s faces on it.

For Cheng Long I also made a sample book with recipes for making paper from the 10 local plants I used for this artwork: Paper Mulberry bark, pomgania (Indian beech tree) bark, Fan Palm leaves, Common Reed leaves, Sugar Cane leaves, Sugar Cane bark (waste from a local night market vendor), Sweet Potato vines and leaves, Beach Hibiscus tree bark, Banana leaves and Rice straw.

My Cheng Long Site Map remains on exhibit in the village, and this artwork has been donated to the Kuan Shu Environmental Education Foundation in Cheng Long for permanent display in the village.

Wutong Foundation Art Project in Zhubei City, Hsinchu County Taiwan

My artist in residency project at Wutong Foundation in Zhubei City, Hsinchu County, Taiwan, is just completed. I was working at the Wutong Foundation for two weeks from March 16 – 31, 2015, and created handmade paper from local plant waste materials and made a Wutong Food Forest Site Map to present to the county magistrate at a press conference on March 30. The magistrate and officers from the Hsinchu County Environmental Protection Bureau were at the press conference to celebrate the official opening of the Wutong Foundation’s planned Food Forest project.

My Wutong Food Forest Site Map was created from handmade paper using 9 different local plants and made in the shape of a Wutong tree leaf. There is a famous old Chinese poem that says the Wutong tree is the only tree that a phoenix bird will land on. I also included a painted image of a phoenix bird on one side along with images of all sorts of fruits and vegetable that will be growing in a few years at the food forest site near the Hsinchu MRT Station on Guengming 6th Road. Zhubei City. The land has been set aside by the county for the food forest project and will be a sustainable community garden using permaculture techniques. Now there is a row of small fruit trees started there and a spiral form made from stones and rubble taken out of the soil when the small trees were planted.

The 9 plants I used in the Wutong Foundation project are: paper mulberry tree bark, shell flower ginger leaves, iris leaves, fan palm leaves, lace bark elm tree bark, Cordia dichotomy bark, banana leaves, and the stems and leaves of field mustard and wolf-tail grass….all found near the Wutong Foundation offices and studio along Guangming 6th Road, Zhubei City.

During this residency I also taught a two-day workshop class for local people to learn how to make handmade paper from local plant materials in a sustainable way. I did not use leaves except those already turning brown and dying back, I used branches that the gardener trimmed from the trees or that we collected growing as weads in a vacant lot near the Foundation.

I enjoyed this residency and the chance to learn more about Hsinchu County and the food forest concept, and I would like to thank the Wutong Foundation for this opportunity. The photos for this project were taken by Timothy S. Allen and his photo blog is at http://allentimphotos2.wordpress.com

Jane’s 2015 Projects in Taiwan – March 12 to June 9

Jane working on Tung Chou site map

Art Projects in Taiwan for Spring 2015

Jane will be in Taiwan from March 12 to June 9, 2015 and will be doing 3 art projects this year:

March 16 – March 31: Artist in Residency, Wutong Foundation, Zhubei City, Hsinchu County, Taiwan

Jane will be an artist in residence at the Wutong Foundation to create a site-specific artwork using handmade paper she will create from local plant waste materials. The “Wutong Site Map” artwork will feature the natural and geographic aspects of the local area as well as its cultural features and the current garden and tree planting projects of the Wutong Foundation. Jane will also teach a papermaking art workshop for local people and present a lecture and hold open studios for people to see the process and join in the process.
Jane has created unique artworks that she calls “site maps” in many residencies around the world, and with these works she uses only local plant materials and other natural and recycled materials collected in the place to make the handmade paper. Then she does mixed media painting, drawing and collage on the handmade paper constructions to create a two-sided suspended artwork. The Wutong Site Map will be displayed at the Wutong Foundation in Zhubei City. Check the website for more information: http://www.wutong.org.tw/en/about-us.html

April 9 – May 4: Curator and artist in residence, Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project, Cheng Long village, Yunlin County, Taiwan Check the Blog at http://artproject4wetland.wordpress.com

Jane has been the Curator for the Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project since she initiated it in 2010. This year Jane has selected 5 international artists who will also be in residence in Cheng Long village during this time to create site-specific environmental installations on the theme of “Fragile – Handle with Care”. This year, in addition to curating the project, Jane will create a site-specific art installation herself. Jane’s artwork for Cheng Long will be a “Cheng Long Site Map”, and she will make handmade paper from local plant waste materials and use other materials collected in the place to create a large-scale suspended two-sided artwork that can be moved around to different sites in the village. Jane will involve the local community and the school children in the papermaking process and have an open studio so that people can join in the papermaking with local plants process. The finished Cheng Long Site Map as well as the community handmade paper artworks will be displayed in Cheng Long Village at a selected site and remain on view in Cheng Long. For more information about the Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project, see the Blog at:

Jane is starting a new environmental art project in Taiwan this year working as the curator with the National Museum of Marine Science & Technology in Keelung, Taiwan. The theme for the art project is “Paradise – Sustainable Oceans”, and the artworks will be outdoor environmental sculpture installations about ocean sustainability and the goal of keeping the beautiful northeast coast of Taiwan a “paradise”. Jane is in the process of choosing 6 foreign artists and 2 Taiwanese artists from over 200 applications, and she will announce the selected artists on March 15. These selected artists will come to Keelung for a 25-day artist in residency May 14 to June 8 and work with the local community, volunteers and visitors to create site-specific works around the Museum and the community. Jane will be staying in Keelung also during the art project to help the artists and supervise all aspects of the NMMST environmental art project. The opening weekend festival will be June 6 and 7.
