In Deep Water by Jane Ingram Allen and Jami Taback is on Exhibition at Discovery Hall, School of Earth and the Environment, Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ

“In Deep Water” is a collaborative art installation by two Northern California artists, one a printmaker (Jami Taback) and one a papermaker (Jane Ingram Allen).  The project is focused on our current climate change crisis relating to water, the most essential requirement for life. This project raises the alarm about water issues and a world in crisis and projects hope for the future using sustainable methods and materials. We are “in deep water”. The collaborative artwork makes use of several printmaking and hand papermaking processes to create a multi-part modular large-scale installation that draw attention to this immense and pressing problem all over the world.

The installation at Rowan University’s Discovery Hall will consist of 6 flowing panels of handmade paper and printmaking joined with thread, and each panel is about 18-24” wide and 25-30 feet long suspended in front of a wall of windows over 36 feet tall.   

This artwork is designed to be very flexible and can pack and ship flat folded at the thread parts.  Here is a photo of Jami holding all the artwork folded up to ship to Rowan University.  

Here’s a photo of the “In Deep Water” installation at Sonoma Community Center Gallery, Sonoma, CA, during January and February 2022. For this installation we used 12 panels each about 15 feet long.

“In Deep Water” will be installed this week at Rowan Univeristy’s Discovery Hall, and on view for the students and the public beginning on Monday, March 21, 2022. The installation at Rowan University’s Discovery Hall will consist of 6 flowing panels of handmade paper and printmaking joined with thread, and each panel is about 18-24” wide and 25-30 feet long suspended in front of a wall of windows over 36 feet tall.   

At Discovery Hall the ceilings are very high, and so we joined the panels together to make 6 super long panels that are about 25 – 30 feet long.  The installation at Rowan University is being done during Spring Break, and Andrea Siwik and Jennifer Todora are coordinating the installation with our written instructions and a sketch/diagram.  We will be available by phone for consultation during the installation this week.  Rowan University Art Gallery Director Mary Salvante will also be helping with this installation.  

Check back here for updates and photos of the finished installation of “In Deep Water” at Rowan University.  The artwork will remain on view at Discovery Hall in the Lobby area and is open to the public during regular campus hours through the remainder of the semester.  

Subsequent exhibitions of the “In Deep Water” project are already scheduled for Gallery Route One Project Space, Point Reyes Station, CA, in Nov.-Dec. 2022, and in late 2023 at Live Forever Foundation Gallery, Taichung, Taiwan.
