Here are some photos of the papermaking activities on Friday August 19 for my Artist in Residency project on Peddock’s Island at Boston Harbor Islands National Park.
On Friday, August 19, we made paper from the invasive plant on Peddock’s Island called Oriental Bittersweet. It is a vine originally from Asia that is wrapping around trees and in general making itself very invasive on the islands.
Another volunteer Christine also came to help with the papermaking, and Bob also joined us for the day of preparing pulp from invasive species and making some bird shaped paper forms that will be used in the finished installation piece to be displayed on Thursday August 25 in Christopher Columbus Park near Long Wharf in Boston for the 100th anniversary of the national parks. I will have a tent there in the park and be there from 2-4 PM that day.
Keep watching the Blog to see more photos of the papermaking activities on Peddock’s Island.

Thanks Jane for upsizing the photos – that is so much better 🙂 Sorry if it caused you more work. Did that invasive plant get there of its own accord was it brought in by someone on purpose or by accident?

Hi and thanks again for your interest in this residency project. The invasive plants on the islands could have been brought there by birds…from seeds in their poop or they could have been planted there sometime by humans. The bittersweet vine is actually quite attractive and has some neat round berries on it so I think it is used as a decorative plant; however it has become very invasive on the islands and since it is not native has spread all over and is choking out other native plants. It is mostly a mystery how the plants got there, but in other places I hear bittersweet vine is not a problem and people like it.

Hi Chin Chih, So nice to hear from you and hope you are enjoying the time in Taiwan. We are planning to be in NY from about Sept. 14 to 18, and may stay in Sea Cliff with Marcia some days and with another artist friend in NYC some of those nights. We will come back to Boston on Sept. 18 and then fly back to CA on Sept. 19. Let’s plan to meet in NY one of those days.
It is also good to hear about the article I wrote about your work being in the October issue of Sculpture!
You have Tim’s phone number I think and it is good to call him to stay in touch.
Best wishes,
Jane
