Living Quilt for Steckborn is blooming now with many red poppies!

My outdoor art installation in Steckborn, Switzerland titled “Living Quilt for Steckborn” is now blooming well with many red poppies. I created this artwork in my California studio and shipped it to Switzerland for installation in April 2021. The artwork has a handmade paper quilt in the “Peaks and Valleys” pattern with seeds for wildflowers in the pulp to grow and change over time. The installation has grown well thanks to the good care from the staff at Haus zur Glocke, an art center in Steckborn, Switzerland. This project was done with the cooperation of Haus zur Glocke Curator Judi Villiger and the city of Steckborn and installed by volunteers. I participates in the April installation by Internet because travel was not possible during the pandemic.

This photo shows the Living Quilt for Steckborn installation blooming on July 10, 2021. The photo was sent to me by Judit Villiger, Director and Curator at Haus zur Glocke. There are so many red poppies now, and I hope we can see some more yellow, white and blue wildflowers soon. I also put another photo here of how the “quilt” looked when it was installed in Steckborn back in April. “Living Quilt for Steckborn” remains on view in Steckborn, Switzerland, and you can also see some of my other living quilt installations blooming now in Sacramento, California at Sojourner Truth Park, and in Santa Rosa, California, at Rincon Ridge Park.

My outdoor public art installation in Steckborn, Switzerland, that was installed on April 14, 2021, with Haus zur Glocke Art Center in the town of Steckborn on the shores of Lake Constance, is beginning to bloom! The handmade paper quilt had seeds for wildflowers in the pulp in the same colors and patterns.  Tiny white flowers (maybe Baby’s Breath) are showing up now, and there is a lot of lush green foliage for other wildflowers.  The different colors of the other wildflowers in this “living quilt” should start to bloom soon.  I am happy to post these photos sent by Haus zur Glocke Director and Curator Judit Villliger on June 7, 2021. 

I plan to make a slide show that will show the process of the “living quilt” in more detail after all the flowers bloom, maybe by mid summer. I will post the complete slide show on YouTube with a link from this Blog.  Also, I will continue posting photos sent by Judit in coming weeks.  A very big thank you to Judit and the staff at Haus zur Glocke for taking such good care of the Living Quilt and sending all of this great documentation.

Hope everyone is having a good summer.  Now it is very hot and dry here in Northern California, and it looks like my “living quilt” installations in California are maybe finished for this year.  They should come back again with blooms and new growth next Spring after our Winter rains.

My “Living Quilts” outdoor art installations to change over time are featured in the June 2021 issue of an Australian magazine, TEXTILE FORUM. The living quilts are outdoor public art installations that consist of a handmade paper quilt with seeds for wildflowers in the pulp to sprout, grow and bloom as the paper pulp dissolves into mulch. Each bed also has a headboard and footboard woven of local branches. The feature article about my “Living Quilts” is in the June 2021 issue, and there are many photos of the installations in different places and with different quilt patterns. The article is about my artist-in-residency project during the pandemic and the process of creating “Living Quilt for Sojourner Truth” that was installed in November 2020 at Sojourner Truth Park in Sacramento, CA. This project was part of the Sacramento Office of Arts & Culture 2020 Artist in Residency Program, and because of the pandemic I had to do most of the work in my own studio and involve people virtually. I also had the opportunity to visit the Desert X outdoor sculpture exhibition in the Coachella Valley of California in late March 2021, and wrote a review of this exhibition for SCULPTURE magazine that is in the April 23, 2021, online edition. Desert X includes 9 large-scale outdoor sculpture installations in a variety of media by artists from around the world, and the works focus on the experience and culture of this Southern California desert valley that encompasses Palm Springs. Living Quilts Blooming in Spring 2021

It is great to see the resilient power of nature and how my Living Quilt Art Installations continue to change over time and keep on producing blooming wildflowers each season. The “living quilts” are handmade paper quilts each with a unique design, and the handmade paper pulp has seeds for wildflowers in the same colors and pattern as the “quilt”. Over time the handmade paper dissolves into mulch, and the seeds sprout and grow into a living, blooming flower bed.

Living Quilt for Steckborn was just installed in Steckborn, Switzerland, on April 17, 2021, and you can see more about that in the post previous to this one. I will post new photos of the “peaks and valleys” handmade paper quilt with seeds for wildflowers in the pulp as they are sent to me by the staff at Haus zur Glocke in Switzerland. People there in Steckborn, Switzerland, are also writing wishes for a better 2021, and they will be collected and posted online too. Thanks to Haus zur Glocke and curator Judit Villiger for making this installation possible even during a pandemic year. I was able to see the installation via a FaceTime call on April 17!

Living Quilt for Sojourner Truth was installed at Sojourner Truth Park, Sacramento, CA, on Nov. 25, 2020, and it is blooming well this spring. This art installation was a part of the City of Sacramento’s 2020 artist in residency project. This photo shows many wildflowers blooming there on April 18, 2021.

“Guns Into Flowers” a living quilt art installation was installed on March 17, 2019. This artwork was created during an artist in residency project in Sacramento working with students at Natomas Charter School and installed at South Natomas Community Center Park, Sacramento, CA. Living Quilt for Santa Rosa was installed at Rincon Ridge Park in Santa Rosa, CA, on Nov. 21, 2018. This “living quilt” is now blooming for its 4th year. This project was supported by a grant from the City of Santa Rosa, and it was a response to the terrible wildfires in Santa Rosa in October 2017. It is great to see the resiliency of nature and the wildflowers continuing to bring new life to this area of Santa Rosa. This photo shows Living Quilt for Santa Rosa on April 9, 2021.

“Living Quilt for Steckborn” to be installed in Switzerland in April

Living Quilt for Steckborn laid out in my living room in Santa Rosa before shipping to Switzerland

I have finished making the “Living Quilt for Steckborn” artwork, and it will be installed April 15, 2021, in Steckborn, Switzerland, at a public park near the shores of Lake Constance. This project is with Haus zur Glocke, an art center in Steckborn, and some of my artworks will also be displayed at their indoor gallery in downtown Steckborn from April 17 to May 2, 2021, as part of their exhibition titled “Opening the Atlas”. The indoor show will include my “Daily Scrolls” installation of 91 handmade paper scrolls created during the first 91 days of Covid 19 quarantine here in Santa Rosa, and also one of my indoor handmade paper quilts created as an artist in residence in 2014 at Sitka Center for Art & Ecology in Oregon. It is great to have my outdoor public art installation and these indoor pieces included in the Haus zur Glocke art programs in Switzerland.

Since I am not able to travel to Switzerland due to pandemic restrictions, my outdoor public artwork “Living Quilt for Steckborn” will be installed by Haus zur Glocke in a pubic ceremony, and it will remain on view to transform into a living blooming bed of wildflowers after several months. The “quilt” is made with handmade paper pulp dyed with non-toxic dyes, and the pulp contains seeds for wildflowers in the same colors and pattern. Over time the paper pulp will dissolve into mulch, and the seeds will sprout and bloom producing a “living quilt”. Announcing New Art Project in Switzerland

I am happy to announce that I have been invited to create a “living quilt” art installation in Steckborn, Switzerland, in April 2021. This art project is with Haus zur Glovke, an alternative art center in Steckborn, a small town located on Lake Constance in the northeastern part of Switzerland. Haus zur Glocke Curator Judit Villager included some of my handmade paper “Site Maps” in an exhibition last November at Haus zur Glocke, and she learned about my current series of “living quilts”. outdoor public art installations with a handmade paper quilt having seeds for wildflowers in the pulp to grow and bloom over time and become a living artwork. Judit has invited me to create a Living Quilt for Steckborn that will be installed in a public park. I first met Judit when I selected her as an artist for an outdoor sculpture exhibition I curated in Taiwan in 2007. I am hoping to be able to travel to Switzerland this April to see Judit again and to install the handmade paper quilt and create a headboard and footboard for the “bed” in Steckborn. This all depends on how it goes with the virus and travel restrictions. If travel is not possible, I will be mailing the handmade paper quilt with seeds in the pulp to Steckborn with installation instructions, and then I will participate virtually from here in Santa Rosa, California.

I will be posting on this Blog links to videos from my Santa Rosa studio showing how the quilt is being made and how it will be put together to cover an outdoor flower bed about 8 feet x 10 feet (244 cm x 305 cm). The design for “Living Quilt for Steckborn” is based on a traditional pattern sometimes called “Delectable Mountains” or “Peaks and Valleys”. This is a traditional American quilt pattern that has connections to the perilous journeys of pioneers across the mountains of North America to settle in the new parts of the country. I also wanted to reference the mountain peaks visible in the distance around Lake Constance and also to recall the peaks and valleys we have all experienced in 2020 with the pandemic and Covid 19. For the Steckborn installation I will make a handmade paper quilt with seeds for wildflowers in the pulp in the same colors and pattern. I am making the handmade paper “quilt” here in my Santa Rosa studio and plan to share videos of my process and progress on the “quilt” for people in Steckborn and around the world. I have selected seeds for wildflowers that are common in America and Switzerland for this “living quilt”. After the quilt is installed in Steckborn, the handmade paper will dissolve into mulch to nourish the earth, and the seeds will sprout and grow into a living, blooming artwork in several months. The quilt will be installed in April in a Steckborn park, and the seeds should start to sprout and grow in several weeks and bloom all Spring and Summer. I hope that watching the seeds sprout and wildflowers start to grow and bloom will provide joy and hope for a better 2021.

Here is a sketch of my design for “Living Quilt for Steckborn” and it will be in blue, yellow, red and white handmade paper with seeds for wildflowers in those same colors in the pulp.

I am using stencils on my 8.5″ x 11″ papermaking molds to create this pattern and join the pieces of paper with natural cotton string put between the layers…this means I have to do 8 pieces of paper for each of these units that are about 17″ wide and 22 inches long. My “quilt” will also have a 5″ border around the outside of the whole quilt.

Making Paper for the “Redwood Violin” and “Living Quilt for Santa Rosa” Blooming Again

Andrew Carruthers (https://www.andrewcarruthers.com ) is creating a new violin that will celebrate Sonoma County and be made with local materials and the help of local artists and craftspeople.  I was asked to create some locally-sourced handmade paper for the label that will go inside the redwood violin, made of redwood and apple wood and other materials also sourced locally.  Andrew visited my studio in Santa Rosa, CA, yesterday, and I showed him my papermaking process using some mulberry bark paper pulp that I had prepared using the bark from trimmed branches of the fruitless mulberry tree in my front yard.  

Here’s a photo of my mulberry tree taken last summer and also a photo showing me stripping bark off the mulberry tree branches to cook, beat and prepare for hand papermaking.  The bark of mulberry trees is used all over the world for papermaking, and it produces a strong paper in an off-white color.  Local calligrapher Sherrie Lovier (https://www.inkmonkey.com/pages/bio.html) will do the lettering on my handmade paper for this special label.  It is great to be a part of this exciting project.  This unique violin made locally with local materials will be featured in concerts next month that will be uploaded for virtual listening.  You can also see videos of the process of creating this violin on the website: https://theredwoodiolin.org

Also, this week it is great to see that my art installation “Living Quilt for Santa Rosa,” is beginning to bloom again for the third season at Rincon Ridge Park in Santa Rosa, CA.  This artwork was a public artwork supported by a grant from the City of Santa Rosa, and it was created with community participation as a response to the devastating October 2017 wildfires in Santa Rosa, CA.  “Living Quilt for Santa Rosa” was installed on Nov. 21, 2018, and it consisted of a raised bed with a handwoven headboard and footboard made of local branches and a handmade paper quilt that I made in the “flying geese” pattern with seeds for wildflowers in the pulp. Over time the handmade paper dissolved as mulch, and the wildflowers grew.  The “quilt” has bloomed with colorful wildflowers each spring, and promises to continue.  I recently repaired the footboard which had blown over during the last severe windstorms we had in northern California.  In a few more weeks we should also see California golden poppies and other wildflowers blooming at this site.

I was invited for this international forum as a result of being selected for an invited artist-in-residency project at Cour Commune (www.courcommune.org). My residency at Cour Commune in Voulx, is now planned for Spring 2021. I will post more information here soon about my residency in France next year.

I also wanted to let everyone know that my home and studio in Santa Rosa, CA, are okay for now. We are located in an evacuation warning zone for the current wildfires in Sonoma County that affected the northeast section of Santa Rosa. My family and I are all fine, and we are watching the news updates carefully and remain packed and ready to evacuate again if needed. The smoke and ash from the nearby fires make the air outside unsafe and hazardous, and we are staying indoors for now.

I am able to work indoors on art for my upcoming projects in November. My exhibition at Haus zur Glocke in Steckborn, Switzerland (www.hauszurglocke.ch) opens on November 25, 2020. I am creating a “Lake Constance Site Map” now with internet resources and a few things that artist friends in Switzerland, Germany and Austria have mailed to me here in California. Lake Constance is a large lake in Europe that lies between Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Here is a photo of my Lake Constance handmade paper artwork in progress:

I will post more about the exhibition at Haus zur Glocke and my “Lake Constance Site Map” soon. The exhibition at Haus ur Glocke titled “Labor-Natur” will feature artworks by 3 artists who use nature as a laboratory to create their art. I will be showing a selection of my handmade paper site maps that are created from plant materials collected at each site. The Lake Constance Site Map is the first one I have made remotely since I was not able to go to Switzerland this year because of the pandemic.

I will also be working in my Santa Rosa studio during October and November to create another “living quilt” installation for the City of Sacramento’s artist in residency program. I will be making some live Zoom programs to show how the handmade paper quilt with seeds for wildflowers in the pulp is designed and made. I will go to Sacramento for one week in November to install my art project “Living Quilt for Sojourner Truth” at Sojourner Truth Community Garden in the Pocket-Greenhaven area of Sacramento, California.

I am using the North Star quilt pattern to refer to how quilts may have been used to show escaping slaves the direction north to freedom. Sojourner Truth was a former slave and famous as a leader in the abolitionist and women’s suffrage movements. Keep watching this Blog to see more about my public art project in Sacramento.

Hello World is an international online art exhibition and art project by TransCultural Exchange in Boston, MA. This international art project was conceived and curated by artist/curator Mary Sherman. This pandemic art project was conceived as a way to bring together artists from various countries around the world to share what they are doing and continue international cultural exchange travel during this time of the pandemic. California Petals is a public art installation I created in August 2020 for a downtown storefront window in Santa Rosa, CA, and it can be viewed at any time from now to October 15, 2020. My installation is part of the Santa Rosa Downtown Chamber’s “Open and Out” program of cultural activities in the downtown area to encourage people to stroll around in the “pedestrians only” blocks of Fourth Street where many restaurants and stores are now open for outdoor dining and limited in-person shopping. My art installation is in a vacant storefront window at 620 Fourth Street, and it consists of many giant handmade paper flower petals with seeds for California wildflowers in the pulp. After the installation comes down on October 15, I plan to “plant” these petals in Santa Rosa so that they will change over time, sprout and bloom in colorful wildflowers. Falling Open: On & Off the Page, Themes of Our Time is a group exhibition at Gallery Route One, Point Reyes Station, CA, that will be online as well as open for appointment viewing from September 18 to October 15, 2020. This is an invitational exhibition of artworks selected by curator Renee Owen that includes handmade artist books, installations and other works that relate to current environmental, social and pandemic issues. For this exhibition I will be showing a new work titled “Daily Scrolls” created during my first months of pandemic quarantine. This artwork has 91 handmade paper scrolls each with unique text and images that reflect my daily thoughts and experiences during this time. Upcoming Art Projects and Activities

2020 Lucid Art Foundation Alumni Exhibition is an online exhibition of selected works by past artists in residence at the Lucid Art Foundation in Inverness, CA. I was an artist in residence at the Lucid Art Foundation in 2013, and for this exhibition one handmade paper sculpture I made during my 2013 residency and another handmade paper sculpture created this year will be included. The first piece made in 2013 is titled “Feather Duster” and makes use of branches from a local olive tree and handmade paper “feathers” I created from local plants. My other paper sculpture in this exhibition created in 2020 is titled “Paper Poppy” and depicts a giant California golden poppy like those blooming in my yard during the pandemic this Spring. Living Quilt for Sojourner Truth, Artist in Residency Project, Sacramento, CA is a public art project that will be completed in November 2020 at the Sojourner Truth Community Garden, Sacramento, CA. I was selected for the City of Sacramento’s Artist in Residency Program to create a site-specific art installation at a community garden in the Pocket-Greenhaven area of Sacramento. For this project I had planned public participation activities and workshops, but this has not been possible because of the pandemic. I will create the handmade paper “quilt” in a traditional “North Star” pattern with seeds in the pulp and bring it to Sacramento in November to create a “bed” for the “quilt” and install it at the Sojourner Truth Community Garden where it will transform over time. Labor Natur, Haus zur Glocke, Steckborn, Switzerland is an exhibition curated by Judit Villager of works by three international artists who explore connections between art and science and use nature as a laboratory. This exhibition is open to the public in Switzerland from November 21, to December 12, 2020. For this exhibition I will be shipping some of my handmade paper “site maps” made in residencies around the world to Switzerland and also creating a new “site map” of the Lake Constance area encompassing Switzerland, Germany and Austria in my Santa Rosa, California, studio. I am doing online research gathering photos and information about plants that are common to northern California and the Steckborn area. Also, Judit Villager is sending me some materials by mail from Switzerland that I can put into the mixed media handmade paper site map. Yesterday I installed my “California Petals” installation in a vacant storefront window at 620 Fourth Street in downtown Santa Rosa, CA. The installation is part of the Santa Rosa Chamber’s “Open and Out” program of public art & culture activities in the downtown area during this Covid 19 time.  See this link for more information about the “Open & Out” programs in Santa Rosa: https://www.openandoutsr.com/art/art1-cbcmw

My art installation is right next to Beer Baron Bar & Kitchen, and many of the restaurants are open for take out or outdoor service (masks and social distancing still required).  Several blocks of Fourth Street in the downtown area are blocked off for pedestrian only traffic, and more art is planned for the “Art Walk” in downtown Santa Rosa. My art installation remains on view through October 15, 2020. I am hoping to “plant” the petals somewhere on vacant land in a park or other public place after the installation comes down. The “California Petals” have seeds for California wildflowers in the handmade paper petals that will grow and bloom in the same colors.
