 “In Deep Water,” an art installation by Jane Ingram Allen and Jami Taback, is now on public display in the lobby of Rowan University’s new Discovery Hall, home of the School of Earth and Environment.  The installation focused on water and the climate crisis consists of 6 long panels each about 25-30 feet long hanging in front of a wall of windows and visible from inside and outside the building.  Other smaller “In Deep Water” panels are also displayed in windows near the Dean’s office and Conference Room in Discovery Hall.  This collaborative artwork by Allen and Taback incorporates hand papermaking and printmaking, and the transparent sheets of handmade paper are embellished with printmaking and joined with threads.  For more information about the work of Allen and Taback, visit these sites:  https://janeingramallen.wordpress.com and https://www.jamitaback.com

This work will remain on public view at Discovery Hall, Rowan University, through the end of this semester in 2022, and then will travel to other sites in the US and internationally.

In Deep Water by Jane Ingram Allen and Jami Taback is on Exhibition at Discovery Hall, School of Earth and the Environment, Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ

“In Deep Water” is a collaborative art installation by two Northern California artists, one a printmaker (Jami Taback) and one a papermaker (Jane Ingram Allen).  The project is focused on our current climate change crisis relating to water, the most essential requirement for life. This project raises the alarm about water issues and a world in crisis and projects hope for the future using sustainable methods and materials. We are “in deep water”. The collaborative artwork makes use of several printmaking and hand papermaking processes to create a multi-part modular large-scale installation that draw attention to this immense and pressing problem all over the world.

The installation at Rowan University’s Discovery Hall will consist of 6 flowing panels of handmade paper and printmaking joined with thread, and each panel is about 18-24” wide and 25-30 feet long suspended in front of a wall of windows over 36 feet tall.   

This artwork is designed to be very flexible and can pack and ship flat folded at the thread parts.  Here is a photo of Jami holding all the artwork folded up to ship to Rowan University.  

Here’s a photo of the “In Deep Water” installation at Sonoma Community Center Gallery, Sonoma, CA, during January and February 2022. For this installation we used 12 panels each about 15 feet long.

“In Deep Water” will be installed this week at Rowan Univeristy’s Discovery Hall, and on view for the students and the public beginning on Monday, March 21, 2022. The installation at Rowan University’s Discovery Hall will consist of 6 flowing panels of handmade paper and printmaking joined with thread, and each panel is about 18-24” wide and 25-30 feet long suspended in front of a wall of windows over 36 feet tall.   

At Discovery Hall the ceilings are very high, and so we joined the panels together to make 6 super long panels that are about 25 – 30 feet long.  The installation at Rowan University is being done during Spring Break, and Andrea Siwik and Jennifer Todora are coordinating the installation with our written instructions and a sketch/diagram.  We will be available by phone for consultation during the installation this week.  Rowan University Art Gallery Director Mary Salvante will also be helping with this installation.

Check back here for updates and photos of the finished installation of “In Deep Water” at Rowan University.  The artwork will remain on view at Discovery Hall in the Lobby area and is open to the public during regular campus hours through the remainder of the semester.  

Subsequent exhibitions of the “In Deep Water” project are already scheduled for Gallery Route One Project Space, Point Reyes Station, CA, in Nov.-Dec. 2022, and in late 2023 at Live Forever Foundation Gallery, Taichung, Taiwan.

 Due to so many wanting to take the March 19 workshop, I decided to offer it again in April!  Join me in my Santa Rosa studio for some indoor and outdoor EXTREME and Experimental Papermaking using a variety of pulps such as kozo (paper mulberry bark), cotton blue jeans, sisal, flax and abaca as well as at least one plant fiber gathered locally. 

We will do such things as make really big paper using pouring methods, make really thin but strong paper using Japanese techniques, make thick sculptural cast paper, burn handmade paper using a flame retardant, make holes, tear and shred paper, make paper that moves and produces sounds and blend some strange and exotic pulps for special effects.  Come prepared for some extreme experimental papermaking to produce unique handmade paper for artwork of all kinds.  This workshop is suited for beginning and experienced papermakers and promises to challenge you to stretch and expand your ideas about papermaking.  

Class size is limited to 4 people, and all must be vaccinated.  All Covid protocols in effect will be followed.

February 23, 2022, will be the last day to see “In Deep Water” at Sonoma Community Center, Sonoma, CA.  The Sonoma Community Center webpage about this project gives all the details:  https://sonomacommunitycenter.org/event/in-deep-water-endangered/

This installation is a collaborative eco art installation art using hand papermaking and printmaking by artists Jane Ingram Allen and Jami Taback, focused on the current climate crisis and water.  A new configuration of the “In Deep Water” collaborative project will be shown at Gallery Route One Project Space, Point Reyes Station, CA, Nov. 19 – Dec. 26, 2022. The artists plan to continue this project and show it at other venues around the world in 2022-2023.

This unexpected opportunity to show “In Deep Water” at the Sonoma Community Center, Sonoma, CA, was supported in part by an Emergency Grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and we are very happy to have been able to install our work in this beautiful light-filled gallery for longer than the two weeks originally planned, but now another exhibition is coming, and we will take this work down on Feb. 24. 
Please let me know if you want photos or more information about this work.  Public viewing in the Gallery is okay with masks, social distancing and groups of no more than 4 people during regular hours, M-F, 10am to 4 pm.   Just let me know too if you would like to meet me there before the show closes on Feb. 23.

The installation of “In Deep Water” in the beautiful gallery space at Sonoma Community Center, Sonoma, CA, is now open for viewing. “In Deep Water” is a collaborative art project by Jane Ingram Allen and Jami Taback focused on water and the climate crisis. The artwork will be on exhibition at Sonoma Community center Gallery until Jan. 30, 2022, Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm, and visitors can go see it without an appointment if they come in groups of no more than 4 people, wear masks, maintain social distancing and have proof of vaccination with them. Email Jane at info@janeingramallen if you would like to have a tour of the gallery with the artists.

You are also invited to a Zoom program next Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2pm Pacific Time for demonstrations of papermaking and printmaking to learn more about how this work was made and see the processes used in its creation. The Sonoma Community Center exhibition of the “In Deep Water” project by Jane Ingram Allen and Jami Taback is supported in part by an Emergency Grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. The whole installation measures about 24 feet wide, 16 feet high and 8 feet deep, and it is made up of 12 panels, each about 2 feet wide and 14 feet long of handmade paper with printmaking on the papers joined by natural threads so it all folds up for easy transportation, and it can be very different at each place where it is installed. Jane and Jami plan to continue adding to this project and exhibiting it around the world. You can walk behind this installation and view the work from the other side too! Yes, the opening and gallery visits are currently on hold and everything will be virtual for the exhibition Jan. 15 – Jan. 30, 2022, of “In Deep Water” a collaborative art project by Jane Ingram Allen and Jami Taback.  Check the website for Sonoma Community Center under Events to see what the latest news is.  We are having activities online via Zoom for both the Artists Talks on this Sat. at 2pm, and the Demonstration Session is now on Sat. Jan. 22 at 2pm via Zoom too. 

Anyway, we are so glad to get to put up this installation in the Sonoma Community Center Gallery, a great space with high ceilings and lots of natural light.  We will post lots of photos, and you should contact Jane via email at info@janeingramallen to arrange a private in-person tour if you are able to visit the gallery during the next two weeks. Looking forward to seeing you online!

The exhibition of a collaborative art project titled “In Deep Water” by artists Jane Ingram Allen and Jami Taback opens on Saturday, January 15, at Sonoma Community Center Gallery, Sonoma, CA.  The project is focused on the current climate crisis and water and makes use of Jane’s handmade paper skills and Jami’s printmaking expertise to create a multi-media multi-part large-scale installation combining printmaking and hand papermaking.  The work will be installed from Jan 15 to Jan. 31 at the Sonoma Community Center Gallery, Sonoma, CA. I am happy to report the receipt of an Emergency Grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts to help support the exhibition of “In Deep Water” at Sonoma Community Center Gallery, Sonoma, California, January 15 to 31, 2022. This collaborative project with printmaking artist Jami Taback results in a mixed-media multi-part installation combining hand papermaking and printmaking and about the climate crisis and water. This grant is for the unexpected opportunity to exhibit this work at the Sonoma Community Center Gallery for two weeks in January 2022. We have also been selected to exhibit this project at Gallery Route One, Point Reyes Station, CA, in Nov. – Dec. 2022, and we will continue working to expand the installation creating more panels to make site-specific installations in multiple venues. We hope to exhibit this work at other places in the US and internationally in 2022 and 2023. The grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts is a great holiday gift! And we are so thankful to be able to do this in-person exhibition at a great gallery space. We are planning a gallery talk and opening at Sonoma Community Center the weekend of January 15-16, 2022, so watch for an update in early January to set the date and time for these events.
